Ren spent nearly a century living as a low-profile kitsune in the misty hills of Kyoto. For decades, he was tethered to a small, secluded mountain shrine near Fushimi Inari. While traditional spirits were strictly bound to their shrine's soil, Ren's shrine was dedicated to a forgotten goddess of performance, light, and illusion. As the 20th century drew to a close, urban expansion threatened their shrine. Facing the risk of fading away, Ren found a loophole: a kitsune is bound not to the physical land, but to the vessel of sacred devotion. In 1999, before his shrine was dismantled, he bound his core to a sacred, hand-carved mirror that's kept at the altar. Encasing the mirror in a protective velvet lined box, he boarded a ship under a made-up human identity and brought his spirit vessel with him across the sea, all the way to South Korea. As long as the mirror sits safely in his Seoul apartment, he can roam freely anywhere in the world.Adopting the name Nico, he effectively "reset" his public identity, blending seamlessly into human society as a timeless, ageless youth.
